YWCA/DUBANA WOMEN HEIFER ASSOCIATION

THE BACKGROUND TO THE ORGANISATON
1.The YWCA /Dubana Mbale women heifer association was started in Bungokho county, Mbale district in 1994 to meet the needs of disadvantaged and marginalized people namely the women and the youth..The association was supported by heifer project international, they received the initial 15 in calf heifers from HPI under YWCA Mbale. HPI stopped supporting the association through the supply of in-calf heifers for needy farmers in 2004 .

2.The number of the Women dairy farmers has grown to 250.The women and members of their families have gained more knowledge of dairy farming and improved their personality. They now own a milk processing plant in Mbale town ,Currently they are engaged in Yoghurt ,Ghee, Paneer, Skimmed milk production in effort to add value to the daily milk they get from their farms.

Yoghurt will be purchased from the association to provide much needed lunchtime nutrition for needy students of Mbale secondary school.

TRANSPORTATION TO SCHOOL

Many of the needy students have to walk long distances to school. The demands on these students can be so high that the temptation to give up full time education can be irresistible. Students following this option are likely to be trapped in poverty.

Access to quality education can break this cycle.

We are trying to make the journey to school one less barrier to learning.

Money raised by the sale of the beads will be used to provide bicycle taxis for the journeys to and from school and to purchase bicycles for the school to loan to students.
